Crocheted Fun Fur jacket for 1 year old, cardigan style with easy hood

Above: Finished jacket with drawstring and 3 buttons on front; close up of same jacket.

Materials:
Lionbrand Fun Fur, 7 balls [each ball is 1 3/4 oz]
   I hook
   Scissors
   Tapestry needle
Cord for drawstring and a safety pin to push it thru the hood band
Optional: buttons, other types of closures

Important Notes:
Chain loosely and try not to work too tight. You WILL drop stitches, so it's important to count as often as possible. If you find that you've dropped a stitch, you can try to rip out your work to find the missing stitch, but it's not as easy as with normal yarn. It's easier to add your skipped stitch to the next row, as close to the center as you can get it. Chain 1 at the end of each row, then turn, unless otherwise stated.  All measurements included can be adjusted to the size of the child. If you need a gauge, 3" = aprox 5 rows.  When you turn the garment to the right side, go to the seams and carefully 'comb' the fur out of the seam with a blunt tapestry needle.

Back  just about 13.5" across, 14" from top to bottom
1. Ch 42 sts. Turn, sc in second ch from hook, sc across. 41 sts.
2. Work even for 37 more rows. Mark each end of this row for armhole. Piece should measure 8".
3. Work even till you have a total of 58 rows. Tie off.
4. Mark the center 17 stitches for back of neck.

Front  7" across bottom edge, 14" top to bottom at sleeve edge
1. Ch 22 sts. Turn, sc in second ch from hook, sc across. 21 sts.
2. Work even for 37 more rows. Mark each end of this row [only one will be used for armhole]. Piece should measure 8".
3. Work 13 rows even.
4. Shape neck. Work 17 sts. Turn [skipping last 4 sts for neck]. Dec 1 st at neck for the next row. Continue to skip 1 st at neck edge for the next 5 rows, till 12 sts remain.
5. Work even on these 12 sts for 7 more rows. Armhole should measure 6".

Work other front the same way. With Fun Fur, you cant really tell right from left, so it doesn't matter if they 'face' the wrong way when finished.

Sleeves  about 12" across, side to side at shoulder edge. 7" side to side at open edge. 10.5" top to bottom. - make 2
1. Ch 37. Turn, work sc in second ch from hook, work sc across. 36 sc.
2. Rows 2-7: work even on 36 sc.
3. Row 8: inc. one st at each end. 38 sc.
4. Rows 9-15: work even on 38 sc.
5. Row 16: inc. one st at each end. 40 sc.
6. Rows 17-23: work even on 40 sc.
7. Row 24: inc. one st at each end. 42 sc.
8. Rows 25-31: work even on 42 sc.
9. Row 32: inc. one st at each end. 44 sc.
10. Rows 33-39: work even on 44 sc.
11. Row 40: inc. one st at each end. 46 sc.
12. Rows 41-46: work even on 46 sc. End off. Sleeve should measure 10.5" from shoulder to cuff. If you find that the sleeve is longer than you like, you can actually cuff it and sew it in place.

Simple hood   24" across front band, about 19" across back, just over 9" from folded band edge to back
1. Chain 73 sts. Turn, work sc in second ch from hook, work across. 72 sts.
2. Work 5 more rows even [6 rows].
3. Row 7 [work eyelits]: Sc in first 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, sc in next st and across to last 4 sc. Ch 2, skip next 2 sts, work sc in last 2 sts.
4. Work one sc in ea st and ch across.
5. Work 2 more rows even. [row 10 will be your last row worked].
6. Fold band in half, and work row 11 thru both row 10 and row 1.
7. Body of hood: rows 1-4, work even.
8. Row 5: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [70 sts]
9. Rows 6-10: work even.
10. Row 11: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [68 sts]
11. Rows 12-16: work even.
12. Row 17: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [66 sts]
13. Rows 18 & 19: work even.
14. Row 20: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [64 sts]
15. Rows 21 & 22: work even.
16. Row 23: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [62 sts]
17. Rows 24 & 25: work even.
18. Row 26: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [60 sts]
19. Rows 27 & 28: work even.
20. Row 29: dec 1 st at ea end of row. [58 sts]
21. Rows 30-35: work even. End off.

Locate eyelits in hood band, and push the cording thru one side to the other. Tie them so they don't come back thru the casing. The reason to do this now is so you can find the inside of the hood easier when you sew it on the jacket.

Finishing
1. Sew shoulders together.
2. Sew sleeve shoulder to armhole, matching edges to marked rows on the front and back. Ease to fit.
3. Sew side seam and sleeve under seam.
4. Sew back seam of hood. Place hood bands at center of front, and sew the bottom of the hood [including the band bottoms] to the neckline, ease to fit.
5. Finish the front of the cardigan. Suggestions; crochet around the opening with sc; or reverse sc; or sew a zipper in [might not be a good idea with the fun fur]; crochet button loops to one side and sew buttons to the other; sew Oriental frog closures to the front.

Pattern developed by CJ in January 2004. Knitware Design software was used for the basic pattern; all alterations for using Fun Fur were done by me.
