Short Sleeve Cotton Crocheted top. Free pattern is in my free crochet patterns area. Made with Aunt Lydia's Denim Crochet Cotton. This works up to be a nice top, but the cotton yarn is worsted weight, and that makes the top a bit heavy to wear in the summer. Would make a nice early spring or late fall top. The bottom photo shows the stitch detail where the colors are changed.

May 2004 - Crochet purses

Left: I used Skacel Paradiso [no longer made] for this one, using the Evening Bag pattern found in McCall's Crochet It!, from 1976. The only thing I did different is that I didn't use the 'button' feature on the bottom and on the straps. I have a Mother of Pearl pin in an Oriental style with a stork on it pinned to the front. Don't in single crochet. Right: I didn't follow any pattern, just chained the amount I wanted and worked hdc across, joining at one side. When I got to the size I wanted, I
worked the back flap, keeping the side straight but decreasing on the inside edge. I then worked another flap on the front part of the purse, at the area where the decreased rows from the back flap showed the front edge. I made this front flap smaller. The strap is single crochet with slip stitches all along both side edges to give it extra strength. I put several pins on this one: a white pearl one that I made, a gold rose with pearl drops that I bought from Avon, a sail boat with a dangling anchor that I bought from Avon, and a pretty Cloisonné bow that I bought from Fire Mountain Gems. This purse was made with Aunt Lydia's Denim Cotton yarn. The bottom of this purse is sewn shut. This purse is lined with a double thickness of fabric in an ecru color with tiny pink roses scattered all over it. I hand stitched it at the top to the top edge of the purse.

This purse is made with Aunt Lydia's Denim Cotton yarn, in navy blue, with the top part and the straps made from Skacel Paradiso yarn. I saw a purse on one of the home shopping channels and really liked it, but felt I could make my own just as nice as what they were selling. I chained the width doubled, joined, then worked in rows in hdc to the height I wanted. I then joined the Skacel yarn, worked a few more rows, then worked the strap [only 1, not 2]. I made it fairly wide and it folds over when you put it over your shoulder. The strap is not very long, so this hugs the body. I then attached the navy yarn at the bottom, and working around the other side of the starting chain, I made a bottom that has decreases at the sides to that the bottom ends up in an oval shape. I then sewed the center seam shut when I was happy with how wide the bottom was. I used paper to trace the outline of the purse and the bottom, then cut out the shapes in plastic canvas. I had to keep adjusting the bottom, to help it fit better, but I didn't whip stitch them together. I want them to 'float'. I then covered each piece with black fabric, front and back, then sewed those pieces together at the sides, sewing the bottom to the bottoms of the sides. I had already sewn the tops of the sides to they had a nice clean edge. I then hand sewed the top of the lining to the top edge of the navy yarn, leaving the Skacel yarn free to 'warp' in, which give it a sort of self closing look. The pins on the front are 4 Cloisonné butterflies that I bought from Fire Mountain Gems, and an enameled blue flower from Nature's Jewelry. You can barely see it, but I put a tiny angel pin made from a crystal with my birthstone in the halo above these other pins, but this is on the Skacel yarn. It was a gift from my mom years ago.
