Crochet Ladies Cardigan
Size large

Materials
  I hook
Aunt Lydia’s Denim Crochet Cotton – 400 yard balls
2 balls navy, 2 balls red, small amount white
  Scissors
  Tapestry needle
  Yard stick
Small lengths of CC yarn or safety pins

Gauge: working pattern, 16 rows = 4”.; 17 sts = 4”. Length of body to underarm is about 19”.

Note: I work tight, which is why I size things larger than I need them. When I’m done, they fit me. If you work loose, adjust the foundation chain accordingly.

Pattern: Moss Stitch [sc in chain of previous row, ch 1, skip sc of previous row, sc in chain of previous row, etc]. Always end with sc in last stitch. You may have to work 2 sc at end, or start with 2 sc at beginning of row.

Body
With blue, ch 181.
R 1: sc in second ch from hook, * ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch *, repeat across.
R 2: [front side of work] work pattern across. Ch 1, turn. Mark as front side of work, and at both sides.
R 3: Pick up the foundation chain to lay against back of row 2, and work thru 1 loop as you work 3. This forms a hem.
R 4 – 59: Work in pattern across, ch 1, turn. Tie off blue yarn.
Attach white yarn, work 2 rows. End off.
Attach red yarn.
R 62 – 76: work pattern. Do not end off.
Move side markers up to last row worked. You will have 45 stitches on each side from edge to side marker, and 90 sts for back, from marker to marker.

Front Sides
R 77: work to marker [45 sts], ch 10 [for 3” sleeve; if you want a longer or shorter sleeve, adjust chain].
R 78: Sc in second ch from hook, work pattern across remaining chains and across body, DECREASE 1 st at end of row on neck edge.
R 79: Work even.
R 80: Work across, decrease one st at neck edge.
R 81 - 90: repeat rows 79 and 80.
R 91 – 104: work even. Tie off at end of last row. [44 sts]

Work other side to match, reversing shaping. Decrease only at neck edge, and start with a chain 9.

Back
R 77: attach red at other side of starting sleeve chain on one side, work in pattern across to other chain end. Ch 1, turn.
R 78 – 107: Work even.

Shoulder
R 108: work pattern on 45 sts, decrease next 2 sts together. Ch 1, turn.
R 109: decrease first 2 sts together, work pattern across to end. Tie off. [44]

Work other shoulder, reversing shaping.

Slip stitch or sew shoulders and tops of sleeves.

Sleeves
Attach white to underside of sleeve, work pattern around sleeve, join, ch 1, turn.
Work another row white. Tie off. Attach blue to underside of sleeve, ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch to end, sl st in next 2 sts on sleeve, turn, skip sl sts, sc in back loop of next 5 sc, sc in both loops of last sc, ch 1, turn. This makes your ribbing. If you want a closer ribbing, sl st in 3 sts on sleeve instead of 2 sts, but alternate this with a row of 2 sl sts in sleeve. At end of row, tie off, sew seam.

Edging
Attach red to lower end of right side, and slip stitch around entire opening to lower left side. Tie off. This helps you have a st to work into, and keeps your edging from getting ‘wavy’. Attach red at lower right edge, either in the garment or in the red sl st you just made, and work in pattern around. At end of row, ch 1, turn. Work another row, ch 1, turn, work one more row, tie off. Work in all loose ends.
