February 2003
NOTE: At most, 58 needles are required to knit this garment.
BACK:
1. Cast on 58 sts in MY, using KP2 and closed edge method. [Note: I
used the double E wrap]
2. Knit 120 rows.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole.
4. Knit 32 more rows. Total 152 rows.
5. Back neck. Thread center 24 sts onto WY. 17 sts each side. Knit
6 rows with WY.
FRONT:
1-2 Follow steps 1 and 2 as for back. COR.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at both ends for armhole. Work 20 rows (
140 rows total).
4. Shape neck. COR. Thread center 12 sts to WY. 23 sts each side.
5. Right neck. LH needles in HP. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 6
times, until 17 sts remain. Knit 6 rows even. Total 152 rows.
6. Cut yarn, leaving a 23.0 ins end. Knit 6 rows WY. Place sts in HP.
7. Left neck. COL. Work as for right neck, reversing shapings.
SEAM and Collar. Seam one shoulder. Hang neck edge on 58 needles, moving
2 sts to one needle if you need to. Knit 6 rows. Latch 1x1 for rib. Bind
Off.
Seam other shoulder and collar. [If you don't want a knit collar like
this, and would rather crochet an edge to the opening, then seam the other
shoulder and work the sleeves.]
SLEEVES:
1. Hang sleeve opening, wrong side facing you, on 50 needles. Make
sure the marked rows are the last needles on each end.
2. Work sleeve, decreasing one st each end of row on these rows: r4,
r8, r12, r16, r19, r22, r25, r28, r31. [Note: I usually work the first
2 rows by hand, then use the carriage for the rest]
3. Work even to 34 rows. COR.
SLEEVE HEM:
1. Reduce sleeve to 28 needles, (putting 2 sts onto 4 needles evenly
spaced across the row, and 1 st on all other needles). Run a CC thread
of yarn across row using blunt tapestry needle, going into and out of every
other stitch, leaving the sts in between untouched. The sts with the CC
yarn in them will be the sts you rib. [the CC thread will keep your sts
from running down the sleeve, and will make the ends of the ribbing even
across the sleeve.]
2. Using KP2 knit 9 rows.
3. Convert marked sts to 1x1 rib using latch tool. Cast off loosely.
FINISHING:
1. Sew side and sleeve seams using invisible seam. Sew any remaining
seams.
2. Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
3. To finish the bottom of the sleeping gown:
a. Single crochet a length of yarn to go around the bottom of
the garment. This will be your tie. Weave in and out of the beginning double
E wrap on front and back, bringing the ends together at the center front
to tie.
b. You can replace the crocheted length of yarn with ribbon.
c. You can also knit a casing at the bottom, working the casing
as you would a hem on both front and back before seaming, but do not latch
up into ribbing. Seam the sides of the casing as you work the side seams,
then fold the casing and sew into place with matching yarn, leaving an
opening to run elastic thru it; sew the ends of the elastic together, then
sew the opening shut.
4. To make a casing with a crisp edge, hang bottom of garment on the
same amount of needles that you used to knit garment, only have the right
side facing you. Hand work each st across, then run a length of CC waste
yarn thru those sts. Remove from bed, turn garment so wrong side of garment
is facing you, and rehang the sts on the same needles. Work 5 more rows
with carriage, then BO. You will notice that the last row of the garment
now forms a crisp edge, and this helps the garment almost 'fold' for you,
to use as the bottom edge of the casing.
5. When using elastic, cut an amount that is not as long as the bottom
of the garment. You want this area to close off and keep the baby warm,
but don't make it so tight that when you pull the garment up to change
a diaper, that the elastic would be tight around the baby's tummy.
