Basic knowledge of crochet terms and stitches is required to make this toy.

Supplies:
Baby yarn in lt. pink, white, yellow, and black; E crochet hook; scissors; large-eye blunt needle; polyester stuffing.

With white, starting with feet, ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch, join.
Ch 1, 2 sc around [12]. Join.
Ch 1, *sc in first st, 2 sc in next st*; repeat from *to* around, join. [18]
Ch 1, *sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st*; repeat from *to* around, join. [24]
Ch 1, sc around, join. Repeat for 5 more rows, end off. Make second foot the same.

Sl st both feet together at seams before ending off on the second foot. Change to pink yarn.

Attach pink in sc right after sl st on one of the legs. Sc around, join to starting sc, turn.
Work 4 rows even on 52 sts, joining at the ends of ea. row and turning the beginning of ea. row, keeping that back seam as straight as possible in the center back.

Still with pink yarn, now work in rows. Do not join at the end of the row, but continue to ch 1 and turn at ends of rows. Work 5 rows with pink.
Next row: sc in 11 sts, sc next 2 sts together [dec], sc in 24 sts, dec, sc last 14 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Continue to work in rows and dec over the dec of the previous row for 3 more rows.
Work 2 dec over the dec of the previous row for the next 3 rows.
Sc evenly across for 3 more rows, ch 1 and turn at end of all rows. [33 sc] At end of last row, break off pink.

Join white with sc in first st, sc in same st, 2 sc in ea. st across. [66 sc]
Work even [one sc in ea. st across] for 4 rows.
Dec one st at each side of head. Note: run a length of CC yarn along head in the dec rows to keep them even.
Work even for 2 rows.
Dec 2 sts at ea. side where CC thread is marked. Remember to carry this CC thread up the head as you decrease.
Repeat last row 2 more times.
Dec 2 sts on face where the nose will go, and continue to dec 2 sts at each side.
Repeat last row once more.
Work even for 2 rows.

With pink yarn, sew back seam a little at a time, stuffing body as you go. Stuffing loosely will make a more 'grab-able' toy. Stop sewing the seam at the neck. Tie a knot in the back with the pink yarn, then run the yarn around the neck in every other st, pulling tight [not a lot!], then knot and tie off pink yarn. This helps shape the neck and bottom of the head.

Next row on head with white: Work 3 sc, dec, repeat around to first side decrease. Dec side as before. Work front even [no decreases]. Work side decrease, then work the 3 sc/dec as on first side of back of head to end of row. Repeat this row 3 more times. [note: you may only get 2 dec on the backs of the head by the last row]

Work even for 1 row.

Stuff lower part of face, making sure to push stuffing into the cheeks. Sew back seam of head up about 1", stuff more of the head.

Work face embroidery, pulling needle thru half of the stuffing. Add more stuffing if the head needs it, and to cover the knots of the thread you embroidered the face with.

Sc evenly around head for one row.

Sl to side dec, sc front of face to other dec side, sl st in next st, turn.
Sk 1st st, dec, sc to other dec, work dec, sl st in next st, turn.
Sk 1st st, work dec; dec next 2 st together across to side dec, sl st in previous sl st, turn.
Repeat last row once.
Stuff, finish seaming back head seam, seam top of head trying to keep it 'flat', not gathered.  Flatten the top head seam so that back seam is as centered as possible. Make sure the head has enough stuffing before you close seam. 'Squish' and 'smoosh' the stuffing to help shape the head.

Ears
Attach white yarn to side of head with sc, pretty much where the dec seam is on the side. Work 6 more sc for the base of the ear. You want the ear to be on the sides of the head, not on the tops. Ch 1, turn, sk 1st st, sc across row. Repeat till 3 sc are left. Break yarn, gather 3 sc on that broken length of yarn and pull up tight. Tie off and weave in ends of yarn. Do this on both sides of the head, keeping the face towards you as you attach the beginning sc on both ears.

Arms - make 2
With white, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch, join. Ch 1.
2 sc around [12]. Join, ch 1.
Sc around. [12] Join, ch 1.
Repeat last row 2 more times.
Break white yarn, attach pink yarn.
Sc around. Do not join. work till piece is long enough to be an arm, about 6 rows. When you are satisfied with how long the arm is, sl st in next st, break yarn leaving length to sew arm to body.
Stuff arm, position on body where you want it [try to make it more towards the front of the upper body, not exactly on the side], sew in place.

After having this doll finished and mailed to the baby it was made for, having it gone from the house for several weeks before downloading the photo from the camera, I can now see that I should have made the arms rounder and not as long. I'm not real happy with how this turned out, but a newborn wont notice, and by the time she does notice, the toy will be in such poor condition that she probably wont care. :-) If I ever make this again [not likely], I'll make some changes to it. If you decide to make this, I'd love to see what you did with the pattern, and I'd like to hear how you changed it or improved it. This is my pattern, but it was based on someone else's hard work, so I can hardly lay claim to it. Hope the child you make this for will love it.   Please dont post this pattern on any other web site. If you want, add a link to your site that points to this page. Thanks!
